Reflections on the LP Convention

May 28, 2008

The Libertarian Party Presidential Debate was reassuring in that all of the candidates claimed to oppose the war in Iraq (although I have difficulty trusting Barr and Root as I mentioned in my previous post), but I noticed that none of the candidates so much as even mentioned a sound currency or the Federal Reserve. I realize no questions were asked about monetary policy (which is a disappointment), but I expected someone to mention it in passing.

I thought the best performance came from Steve Kubby. My personal favorite candidate Mary Ruwart was decent but unspectacular. Mike Gravel seems like a nice enough guy, but his obsession with the National Initiative is scary. Barr and Root are good speakers, although Root’s intensity makes me crawl under the bed occasionally. George Phillies and Michael Jingozian had no flare. Unfortunately, Christine Smith did not participate in the debate, but I heard she gave an anti-endorsement of Bob Barr in her concession speech. I would like to hear that speech, but I can’t find it.
